About the Position

As DataKind sets out to scale its impact, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will serve as a critical senior leader charged with leading internal operations and overseeing core functions (e.g., HR, Finance, Product, Community, Development, Tech etc.). Reporting directly to (and working hand-in-hand with) the CEO, the COO will help shape and translate DataKind's strategic vision into a sound operational plan. The COO will manage a growing senior team of 5+ and in doing so, will coach and develop talent across the organization towards outcomes while building and maintaining a positive and inclusive organizational culture. With growth on the horizon, the COO will also bring a critical eye towards designing and implementing organization-wide systems capable of supporting DataKind's growing work. The COO role is an exciting opportunity for an operations guru who thrives at leading through times of growth and change to apply those skills towards leveling the data science playing field for the social sector.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategic Planning

  • Work in partnership with the CEO to create the strategic five-year plan and implement new processes and approaches to achieve it
  • Coordinate the annual operations plan and budget and facilitate the OKR (Objectives and Key Results) process with the senior leaders of the team
  • Develop and facilitate the OKR review process that measures and evaluates progress against goals for the organization

People Management

  • Serve as an internal leader of the organization and provide a strong day-to-day leadership presence
  • In partnership with the CEO, regularly set, review, and reinforce DataKind's values and cultural norms
  • Hire, lead, manage, and develop the organization's leadership team ensuring leaders have the resources they need and are well positioned to deliver on their respective outcomes
  • Partner with Director of Talent to establish best-in-class people management/development practices and systems
  • Establish clear DEI metrics for recruitment and retention of both staff and volunteers and hold senior leaders accountable to living the diversity value and meeting DEI metrics
  • Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and ensure open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic, and impact performance against stated milestones and goals

Financial Oversight

  • Oversee the financial status of the organization including developing long and short range financial plans, monitoring the budget and ensuring sound financial controls are in place
  • Set financial priorities accurately to ensure the organization is operating in a manner that supports the needs of the program and staff
  • Arm CEO with monthly financial reporting and forecasting in support of transparency and continuous progress towards achievement of goals/priorities
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures
  • Oversee audits and proper tax filing and remain up-to-date on nonprofit audit best practices

Program & Operations Oversight

  • Establish/manage effective systems to track programmatic progress in each department , and regularly evaluate program components and PTG (progress to goal)
  • Coach and advise department heads as needed to ensure goals are being met
  • Prepare regular reports of top-level metrics for the CEO and board on programmatic progress
  • Identify holistic cross-departmental improvements in the name of optimizing the efficacy and efficiency of DataKind's organizational operations
Candidate Requirements:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of work experience in business and/or operations, including a minimum of five years of senior operations management experience
  • Experience running delivery projects and leading client and business capture, delivery, and post implementation support teams
  • Comfort leading across a range of operational verticals (e.g., human capital, finance & accounting, tech, systems/processesses)
  • Experience working within a consulting and/or client service setting with an understanding of managing projects/teams across a variety of engagements preferred
  • Exceptional operations skills; ability to establish best-in-class systems and processes in order to maximize efficiency and deliver high-quality results across an organization
  • Operational mindset; an unwavering belief that strong operations are mission-critical and a passion/conviction for driving even the most challenging operations efforts forward
  • Excellent people management skills; believes deeply in the importance of human capital with a track record of managing and developing high-performing teams to achieve ambitious results
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to organize and interpret data, generate insights, and anticipate challenges and opportunities
  • Experience overseeing data and reporting systems with an eye towards flawless execution
  • Experience leading strategic planning and subsequently operationalize the strategy into tactical implementation
  • Strong emotional intelligence with the ability to establish trust and buy in-from disparate groups
  • Comfort operating within ambiguity and driving to clarity wherever possible
