Having worked for 13 years to provide financial access to the unbanked and underserved, Kiva has become a trusted name with strong partnerships across the global microfinance industry and has amassed knowledge and insights that can lead to systems-level solutions. For example, Kiva recently launched a partnership that brings together the U.N. Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the U.N. Development Programme (UNDP) in the creation of a bold, new initiative designed to give Sierra Leone's seven million citizens, most of whom have no credit history or formal identity, access to financial services. The centerpiece of the partnership is the new Kiva Protocol, leveraging blockchain technology to create and establish a national digital identification system using distributed ledger technology (DLT). The country wide identity will also be leveraged to support a new credit bureau in Sierra Leone to ensure that every citizen in Sierra Leone has secure and complete ownership of their personal data and information. This is one example, among many, of new initiatives Kiva is pursuing.

About the Position

Kiva is seeking a strategic, dynamic, and intellectually curious leader to serve as its Chief Officer Strategic Development and Partnerships. Reporting to the CEO, this individual will lead the strategic direction and overall management of the organization's fundraising operations across a range of funding sources as Kiva embarks on an ambitious and innovative set of initiatives designed to expand financial access to help underserved communities thrive. The Chief Officer, Strategic Development and Partnerships will also serve as a key member of the executive leadership team and will manage two direct reports and a total team of approximately ten.

This ideal candidate will have experience raising capital in a range of contexts (e.g. philanthropic fundraising, social good investing, and/or commercial sales), bring knowledge of and passion for international development, and be an avid and quick learner who thrives in a dynamic and stimulating environment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Organizational Leadership

  • Serve on Kiva's executive leadership team, collaborating with the CEO and other senior leaders to help drive the organization's vision, strategy and cultural development
  • Partner with the CEO and other senior leaders to develop funding strategies that shape and fuel the organization's existing and new initiatives
  • Serve as a compelling external voice and ambassador for Kiva's mission
  • Act as a liaison to the Board, presenting key development updates and building strong relationships with board members
  • Serve as a culture builder and carrier for the organization
  • Serve as an external leader for Kiva, speaking publicly at events and conferences and presenting as a thought leader on relevant topics

Fundraising Strategy and Execution

  • Develop and refine a comprehensive and innovative fundraising strategy in alignment with Kiva's organizational vision and goals
  • Act as a lead fundraiser for Kiva, securing capital from multiple sources (e.g. corporations, foundations, social good investors, private markets) to fund large and complex initiatives, such as Kiva Protocol
  • Expand Kiva's base of donors, across a range of sectors and funding types
  • Oversee the planning and execution of ambitious capital campaign designed to raise $30M+ in unrestricted funding to allow Kiva to invest in future growth and impact in an agile way
  • Ensure the efficient use of fundraising systems and processes, as well as accurate and timely reporting
  • Cultivate and engage Board of Directors members on an ongoing basis, with a strategic approach toward establishing a culture of philanthropy and deepening their relationships with Kiva

Team Management

  • Lead a team of 10 full-time employees, including the Vice President of Strategic Development and Vice President, Corporate Engagement and their respective teams
  • Communicate overall development strategy as well as team and individual goals to support successful execution of that strategy
  • Manage and motivate staff to achieve annual fundraising goals, holding team members to a high standard of excellence and accountability
  • Develop and mentor team to ensure individuals are achieving impact for Kiva and developing as professionals
Candidate Requirements:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 15 years of professional experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role
  • Track record of generating revenue, ideally in a range of contexts including philanthropic fundraising, private sector sales, and/or social good investing
  • Exceptional strategic and analytical thinking skills; genuine intellectual curiosity and high emotional intelligence
  • An entrepreneurial and innovative mindset, coupled with a strong ability to navigate ambiguity
  • Exceptional relationship building and influencing skills, with a track record of building strong relationships at all levels across diverse groups of people
  • Experience leading and managing senior teams to achieve ambitious results
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire a diverse range of audiences
  • A high degree of cultural competence and belief in the value of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences
  • Passion for Kiva's mission and core values, ideally with experience working or living abroad
  • Experience in international development strongly preferred
