About the Position

The COO will ensure that citiesRISE maximizes its potential for global impact by scaling programs and designing effective implementation strategies that will affect one billion young people around the globe. This is a newly created position, responsible for leading the citiesRISE operations across geographic and programmatic areas, finance, and talent functions. The COO will create systems and structures that enable collaboration and innovation across functions to ensure citiesRISE achieves its global impact goals. The COO's coordination and tracking of programs and functions will ensure effective hyper-local programs that transform mental health and wellbeing on a global level. Working in close partnership with functional and regional leaders, the COO will develop and track key performance indicators, while also coaching and mentoring the citiesRISE team. This is a great opportunity for a highly motivated, intellectually curious leader to develop a fast-growing, highly respected global organization.

A pillar of the management team, the COO will ensure that all departments, functions, and geographies are delivering the best possible performance. Reporting to the CEO, the COO will oversee key direct reports and a global team of program experts and consultants.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Organizational Leadership and Impact

  • Maximize citiesRISE's impact by developing strategies that allow programs and services to scale their impact, maximize effectiveness, and support the organization in achieving its one billion youth goal.
  • Drive the implementation of the citiesRISE strategic plan, and develop a dashboard to track key performance indicators, suggesting improvements, as possible
  • Identify interconnections between initiatives and regions to help improve and scale operations; create opportunities for sharing best practices across cities, programs, and lines of service
  • Manage a team of key direct reports, overseeing the following teams: programs, cities, operations and finance, and talent; mentor and develop direct reports using a supportive and collaborative approach: assign accountabilities; set objectives; establish priorities, and monitor and evaluate results

City and Program Implementation

  • Ensure continuous innovation and programmatic excellence, coordinating between the core program team and city leaders implementing the work, to implement programs that will transform public health
  • Manage and support the organization's city experts working across five cities by establishing clear goals, regular reporting, and systems to support their work
  • Track citiesRISE's lines of programming: youth engagement, data, and technology; ensure coordinated but differentiated delivery of these services in different communities and markets
  • Support program leaders as they work toward continuous improvement by providing management coaching; support them as they develop reusable frameworks and solutions to local challenges
  • Oversee the creation of a set of operational agreements with city stakeholders and partner organizations; oversee the creation of both templates and region-specific agreements that comply with applicable local law; address partner questions and concerns, as needed

Operations and Finance

  • Oversee the development of long-range and short-range financial plans to ensure organizational health and sustainability; monitor the budget and ensure that resources are allocated to drive maximum return on investment
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures; oversee audits and proper tax filing and remain up-to-date on nonprofit audit best practices
  • Develop a talent function and team to establish best-in-class people management and professional development, succession planning, career tracks, and performance reviews
  • Oversee the hiring and on-boarding of staff across all functional areas; ensure compliance with local and international laws and practices
  • Establish clear metrics around diversity, equity, and inclusion, as they relate to recruitment and retention of both staff and volunteers; hold senior leaders accountable for living up to citiesRISE diversity values
Candidate Requirements:
  • Minimum of 10 years of work experience leading a mix of functions, products, programs and/or initiatives, including a minimum of five years of senior leadership experience running cross-functional teams or service delivery across a range of programs or product lines; multisite operations and operations leadership in a global and regionally dispersed context is required
  • Ability to lead a wide range of operational verticals (e.g., human capital, finance & accounting, tech, systems/processes, programs/products); experience working within a programmatic setting with an understanding of managing projects and teams across a variety of engagements preferred
  • Track record of translating vision and strategy into innovative and scalable organizational practices
  • Exceptional operations skills; ability to establish best-in-class systems and processes in order to maximize efficiency and deliver high-quality results across an organization
  • Operational mindset, with an unwavering belief that strong operations are mission-critical; passion for driving even the most challenging operations efforts forward
  • Excellent people management skills; with a track record of managing and developing high-performing teams to meet and exceed ambitious goals
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to organize and interpret data, generate insights and anticipate challenges and opportunities
  • Experience overseeing data and reporting systems with an eye towards flawless execution
  • Strong emotional intelligence with the ability to establish trust and buy in-from disparate groups
  • Comfort operating within ambiguity and driving to clarity wherever possible
