About the Position

Over the next several years, New Profit will continue to expand its portfolio of breakthrough social entrepreneurs, with a dedication to making both the sector and New Profit itself more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. In this context, New Profit is seeking a thoughtful and strategic leader to serve as its next Chief People Officer (CPO). The CPO will re-invigorate New Profit's vision, strategy, and systems for talent management and help advance the organization's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, both internally and externally. The CPO will also support the development of strong talent practices across New Profit's portfolio, and will serve as a hub for learning and sharing insights in the field.

The CPO will report to the Chief Operating Officer and manage a team of three. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Performance Management and Career Development

  • Work with senior leaders to develop and codify New Profit's management philosophy, approach to professional learning, and leadership development practices
  • In collaboration with the Director, Talent and Organizational Development, initiate the development of tools and systems for management training and coach senior leaders throughout the organization on effective management practices
  • Drive the transition to a new competency model and online performance management system
  • Lead effective and consistent implementation of performance management practices across the organization
  • Ensure ongoing opportunities for learning, coaching, and mentorship across the organization

Organizational Development

  • Create a multi-year talent strategy to support New Profit's mission, growth, financial sustainability, and commitment to diversity
  • Partner closely with Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer to create a sustainable, cost-effective talent model for near-term and long-term goals
  • Set the tone for New Profit's culture by leading by example, coaching and influencing others, especially leaders and managers, and listening deeply to the full team
  • Co-lead the organization as a core part of the leadership team

Culture and Engagement

  • Oversee New Profit's efforts to embed its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion into organizational practices and culture
  • Support New Profit's affinity groups and elevate critical feedback and suggestions
  • Refine and implement strategies for gathering and addressing employee feedback
  • Track staff engagement, DEI experiences and perceptions (eNPS and DEI indices) on an ongoing basis; and create strategies to continuously improve retention and engagement

Recruitment and Retention

  • Design and implement a recruitment strategy to attract a robust and diverse pipeline of talented candidates for open positions
  • Refine selection processes, developing tools and training to support effective and equitable hiring
  • Coach and support managers throughout the organization on strategies for recruiting diverse and high-potential talent
  • Oversee the onboarding process to ensure new hires have a smooth and productive transition onto the team
  • Develop and maintain a strong network of high-potential talent interested in New Profit's mission

Portfolio Support and Engagement

  • Work with leaders across New Profit's portfolio to share best practices, provide counsel, and support the ongoing development of strong talent leaders across the portfolio
  • Develop relationships with leaders across the portfolio and make connections, both to support New Profit's work, and to support talent work in the field
  • Create systems and processes to track talent across the portfolio to better understand performance, opportunities, and challenges
  • Identify key leaders across the portfolio and ensure that those leaders have the resources they need and that they are given appropriate mentoring
Candidate Requirements:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • 15+ years of professional experience, including five years in a senior leadership role
  • Track record of success in implementing high-quality talent management practices at several high-performing organizations
  • Commitment to and experience in building and sustaining a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace
  • Adaptive strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional relationship building and influencing skills, with the ability to develop trusting relationships to develop trusting relationships at all levels and across identities, both within and external to New Profit
  • Demonstrated success coaching and mentoring direct reports, peers, and senior leaders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate a clear and compelling vision and generate buy-in for that vision
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, and learning-oriented environment
