About the Position

WES has created a new Chief Operating Officer (COO) role to lead the charge in advancing this social enterprise, which has operating revenue of $71M and an additional $30M investment fund, to the next level. Building on WES' solid history and foundation, the COO will infuse innovation and strong business practices into WES's evaluation and production efforts ensuring they are able to effectively meet a growing demand (i.e., WES processed half a million evaluations this past year and that number is climbing) while also optimizing their approach to ensure WES remains a leader amidst a rapidly evolving field. To do this, WES seeks an individual who possesses the adeptness needed to effectively and efficiently operate the businesses, build new revenue streams, and adapt the business based on external environmental and market assessments related to international students, immigration, competitors, market-place innovation, governmental and regulatory developments. As a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the COO will report to the CEO/Executive Director and lead the organization's core businesses: Evaluation & Production (US & Canada), Knowledge Management, Policy, Knowledge & Data (PKD), Marketing, and IT, with a total staff size of approximately 300 employees.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • In partnership with the broader Executive Leadership Team, help develop and execute a strategic vision for the organization
  • Ensure WES' core revenue businesses achieve revenue targets through optimization of the current work and the development of new business and revenue sources (e.g., product development, adjacent business opportunities, geographic expansion etc.)
  • Drive operational innovation to ensure WES positions itself ahead of the curve among a competitive/evolving field and foster a culture of innovation among the broader team at WES, encouraging the contribution of ideas for new products, processes, and services
  • Serve as an exceptional organizational leader, manager and coach; develop strengths in others and model effective data-driven decision making
  • Lead the Evaluation and Production function (US and Canada), setting clear priorities and measurable goals in order to optimize the delivery of high-quality evaluation reports on time and on budget
  • Lead the Knowledge Management, Policy, Knowledge and Data (PKD), Marketing, and IT functions in order to preserve and expand WES‘ knowledgebase and further position WES as a thought leader in the space
Candidate Requirements:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant business experience with a minimum of 5 years spent leading the commercial arm of a business with full P&L responsibility
  • Demonstrated experience managing a large budget and achieving earned income targets
  • Brings a track record of generating new and innovative income streams for a business
  • Stellar analytical skills; a track record of setting ambitious, data-driven strategic plans with an eye towards innovation and new business development
  • Market driven, and committed to monitoring the competitive landscape, market-place innovations, and changes in government policy and regulations
  • Adept at overseeing operations management for high-volume, process-driven functions with an eye towards automation and innovation; experience leveraging AI a plus
  • Demonstrated success building and managing high-performing teams towards ambitious outcomes
  • Experience with knowledge-based enterprises, commercialization, and/or e-commerce a plus
  • Passionate about social enterprises, and committed to WES' Mission, Vision and Guiding Principles
  • Relevant degree required
