About the Organization
Citizens Housing and Planning Council (CHPC) is a unique civic organization with a long history and rich traditions. At the same time, it continues to evolve as a cutting edge research and policy organization focused on housing and planning in NYC. CHPC's agenda is practical, not political and its purpose is to help decision makers, inside and outside of government, by mapping out realistic steps that can result in positive change.
The organization's annual budget is almost $2 million with a total staff of 7 (currently 6) which includes the Executive Director, a Deputy Director, one Senior Policy Analyst, two Policy Analysts, one Policy Analyst + Special Initiatives, and an Administrative Associate. There are often interns and research fellows throughout the year as well. The annual luncheon gala raises around one third of the organization's annual operating costs and is attended by 1,000 people from across the government and NYC housing industry. The remainder of the annual budget is raised through support from board members, individual donors, other event revenue, foundation grants, and corporate giving.

About the Position
CHPC is now seeking an extraordinary candidate to serve as its Executive Director to lead the organization with a focus on long-term growth and success. The incoming ED will honor its long history and rich traditions, build on its success, expand its impact, increase its fundraising, and embrace its unique, collaborative culture that is well established with its Board and staff. All of the Executive Director's responsibilities rely on a close working relationship with the Deputy Director and staff, key members of the board, not limited to the Chair and President, the extensive network of outside constituents including government officials, wider industry leaders, and funders whose collaboration is key to CHPC's success.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Support and encourage a collaborative work environment where input is welcomed, cooperation is valued, and the overall effectiveness and success of CHPC is a shared goal amongst the team
- Act in partnership with the Deputy Director to build, mentor, and inspire a high-performing and diverse team
- Work with the Board of Directors (100 leaders, with an Executive Committee of 17) to encourage discussion, support input and coordinate their voluntary participation CHPC's work through ad hoc work groups and special committees ("working committees")
- Maintain and encourage positive and collaborative relationships with government agencies, members of the housing and community development industry in NY, and other housing organizations
Programmatic Leadership (Policy/Communication/Education)
- In collaboration with the Board, staff, and CHPC's working committees, set CHPC's annual agenda for policy analysis, events, key topics, and core objectives
- Collaborate with government and other industry leaders to shape CHPC's policy work
- Work closely with the Deputy Director and key board members to develop an effective communication strategy
- Continue to develop and apply creative forms of communication that will best present the work and help to attract attention of key policy makers and involved members of the wider industry
- Act as a key point of contact for the press and ensure that relationships are maintained and continue to grow
Strategic Fundraising and External Leadership
- Develop and lead the fundraising strategic vision for CHPC to ensure short term and long term financial success
- Oversee and shape the annual luncheon
- Develop an annual budget and ensure transparency for the Board (Finance and Investment subcommittees) and staff and accuracy for CHPC's financial outlook
- Represent CHPC in a variety of public forums and high level meetings with government and industry leaders
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Passion and enthusiasm for the mission of CHPC
- 10+ years of experience in housing, planning, or community development in New York City, with a well-grounded understanding of policy analysis and research
- Demonstrated success leading an organization and inspirationally managing a team
- Strong strategic thinking and planning skills
- Public speaking experience and appetite
- Capacity to drive fundraising, successfully managing new and existing funder relationships; ideally with a track record of successfully driving nonprofit fundraising across a variety of revenue streams
- Exceptional communication and relationship building skills
- Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, and decision-making
- Independent and creative thinker who wants to make housing and planning policy engaging and exciting
- Interest in international best practices in housing and planning; both to share NYC best practices to other places and to bring in fresh approaches for NYC from other global cities
- Experience effectively working with a Board of Directors
- Transparent and high integrity leadership style
- Bachelor's Degree and ideally a master's degree, or its equivalent
Compensation and benefits:
The compensation range for this role is $200,000 - $250,000 base with additional performance bonus.
