Public Rights Project (PRP) is an 501c3 non-partisan, non-profit organization founded in 2017 by Jill Habig, an Ashoka award-winning fellow and former civil rights attorney. PRP is a fully-remote team of 23 working across nine states. In 2024, its operating budget is $7.8M. Some of its key funders include Ford Foundation, Skoll Foundation, Crankstart, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Democracy Fund.

About the Position

PRP is looking for a strong team player to join us as the Director of Individual Giving (DIG). You will join a high-performing team, which includes a Chief Development Officer, Development Manager, and a grants management consultant, to help grow PRP's impact and unrestricted revenue by developing and implementing a comprehensive, multi-year strategy and tactics to broaden PRP's individual donor base and deepen our relationships with individual donors. You will collaborate with leadership across the organization, including legal experts and Board members to grow and build your portfolio and advance PRP's fundraising goals.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing, managing, and maintaining an active portfolio of 50+ individual donors and prospects capable of making gifts of at least $10,000 annually
  • Developing and implementing a strategy to increase and retain individual donors giving <$1,000 annually
  • Leading the annual board campaign and supporting board members in achieving their fundraising goals
  • Partnering with the CDO in fundraising for the annual gala by selling tickets and sponsorships for the event
  • Managing the individual giving pipeline and conducting prospect research
  • Ensuring that the CEO, CDO and other solicitors are fully prepared for every donor/prospect meeting by preparing briefing materials, leading prep meetings, and ensuring follow-up
  • Working with the Program Team to achieve fluency in and remain up to date on PRP's reach, priorities, and impact
  • Use Salesforce (our CRM) to manage the individual giving pipeline and maintain accurate and up-to-date donor records
  • Coordinating with the Finance Team and Development Manager to forecast revenue and ensure the accurate and timely fulfillments of gifts and sponsorships
  • Partnering with the Development Manager to continually improve the execution of our individual giving program
  • Support donor engagement and coordination across PRP's special events from the annual gala to virtual events and briefings
  • Other duties as assigned

Candidate Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position
  • Experience executing fundraising strategies to build relationships with individual donors resulting in significant funding in a nonprofit setting, preferably in a legal or political context
  • Minimum of 10 years of related experience
  • Experience managing people, volunteers, and/or contractors - highly preferred
  • Experience successfully soliciting, closing, and stewarding donors with making gifts of $10,000 - $100,000 or more
  • Experience writing fundraising appeals, collateral, reports, and other development-related materials for print and digital platforms
  • Experience with prospect research, including working with wealth screening tools
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Strong project management skills
  • Experience with events management and building relationships with law firms - preferred
  • Experience working with boards of directors - required
  • Ability to build strong and trusting relationships
  • Ability and willingness to complete and to oversee administrative tasks in support of team goals
  • Ability to deliver high-quality results on a deadline
  • Experience in or ability to learn the following systems: Google Suite, Salesforce, and Asana - preferred
  • Interest or experience in the following subject matters: Civil Rights, Reproductive Rights, Voting Rights, and Workers' Rights
  • A belief in the power of state and local government to make positive, progressive change in the world and a passionate commitment to economic, racial, gender, and environmental justice

Physical Requirements: Requires sitting, talking and listening for up to 8 hours per day. Certain situations may require lifting items up to 20 pounds.

Location: Public Rights Project is a fully-remote organization and team. This role will require travel to donor and PRP meetings and events. We currently have remote staff in Oakland, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Portland (Oregon), and Washington, DC, as well as other cities.

Compensation and benefits:

The determined salary range for this role is set at $135,000- 170,000 (for internal equity, PRP can not engage in salary negotiations outside of this range)
