Program Officer, Civic Partnerships

Our Focus

Our active grantmaking in Los Angeles focuses on several interconnected and interdependent areas, which we approach collectively through three grantmaking streams:

• Skills for a new economy: increase access to quality educational experiences for youth from historically marginalized communities in Los Angeles, specifically focused on skills and experiences adapted for the new economy, including a focus on STEM, skilled trades and increased connections between K-12 to postsecondary career pathways.
• Pathways to good jobs: increase access to good jobs, particularly in a transitioning economy fueled by technology disruption and green infrastructure. As history has shown, without an explicit focus on equity, people from historically marginalized communities will continue to bear the burden of this transition.
• Civic Partnerships: inspire and increase civic engagement and the next generation of civic leaders, increase public and private investment in L.A., and amplify the impact of our Skills and Pathways portfolios by investing in related or underlying issues.

With an endowment of close to $2 billion, TBF is committed to dedicating significant annual resources towards our vision and mission, and working collaboratively with communities, stakeholders, other funders as well as civic and business leaders to create systemic and sustainable change in our home city.

For over 60 years, L.A. has been the Broads' adopted hometown and for many decades, Eli was the city's tireless booster. The Broad Foundation continues to build on the Broad's many efforts to think big about L.A.'s potential and strengthen L.A.'s civic, cultural and economic infrastructure through its focus on Civic Partnerships.

We are looking for an innovative, equity focused leader with a deep and multifaceted understanding of Los Angeles to help us carry on the Broads' legacy of championing the city. The incoming leader will have a strong knowledge of the city, its governance structure, and diverse stakeholder groups. With a strong implementation focus to guide the grant making portfolio, the program officer will help empower historically marginalized Angelenos and drive progress and engagement across the city.

The Program Officer, Civic Partnerships reports to the Chief Strategy Officer and helps lead civic related grantmaking to inspire and increase civic engagement and leadership, bolster LA's civic fabric and infrastructure, address city-wide crises or challenges, and amplify TBF's efforts to increase economic mobility for Angelenos by tackling key underlying issues.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Program Development

• Work closely with the Chief Strategy Officer to develop and implement the strategic and operational objectives of the Civic Partnerships portfolio.
• Design and manage programs that further or integrate civic engagement and bolster the civic infrastructure of LA; review and revise program strategies as-needed.
• Integrate civic strategies internally across grantmaking portfolios, share learnings internally and contributes to collective effort towards systems change.
  

Grantmaking

• Manage Civic Partnerships pipeline and project manage civic related initiatives; research, analyze and identify new potential grantees, review and assess proposals, conduct due diligence including reviews and analysis of financial documents as well as site visits for pending and active projects.
• Identify and pursue collaboration with other funding partners, prepare investment recommendations, background and memos as needed and for the Board of Trustees. Work collaboratively with the Chief Strategy Officer, the Director of Grant Operations and the VP of Programs to capture, develop and share strategic evaluation outcomes and metrics.
• Facilitate ongoing communication with and about grantees by organizing regular touch points and actively work with the communications team and program team to capture, develop, share and utilize knowledge to lift up the work of grantees.
• Identify investments that complement the place-based efforts in the Skills and Pathways pillars of our strategy

External Relations

• Build and strengthen relationships with TBF's current and prospective partners; maintain an in-depth understanding of challenges and opportunities they face and center their experience and voice, serving as a point of contact for grantees and programmatic-related questions.
• Identify and build strategic partnerships with community, philanthropic, business, government and other stakeholders and coalitions to advance objectives.
• Represent TBF at meetings, public forums and convenings to build and maintain strategic alliances and foster deep relationships with individuals and partners within the local, state and national landscape.

• 7+ years of experience in relevant subject areas or related experience, including the LA County / Southern CA nonprofit community, government agencies, elected officials, civic leadership, urban planning, inclusive economic development and civic leadership.
• Strong alignment with TBF's vision, mission, and values and love of Los Angeles and all its treasures and challenges
• Demonstrated commitment to and experience in social change and impact through civic engagement, partnerships, advocacy or related issue areas
• Demonstrated knowledge and network of diverse neighborhoods and communities of interest of the region and passion and proven track record of working with and across diverse constituencies and viewpoints
• Strong relationship builder and networker with ability to quickly build rapport and establish trust and respect among colleagues, our grantees, partners and other stakeholders
• Demonstrated knowledge of systems change strategies, relevant policy areas and/or advocacy
• Track record of developing, managing and driving multi-faceted projects and initiatives
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to represent TBF in many environments
• Enthusiastic collaborator with knowledge of the fundamentals and best practices of effective grantmaking processes and approaches
• Entrepreneurial, self-starter with strong critical thinking skills and proven ability to effectively manage the details, recognize trends, analyze data and make strategic programmatic recommendations
• Solutions oriented with proven track record of identifying gaps and recommending improvements
• Strong analytical and organizational skills with a high attention to detail
• A high level of ethics, integrity and accountability, with an ability to use discretion and uphold confidentiality
• Willingness to work in ambiguity and adapt to changing and competing priorities
• High level of proficiency with database management tools including Salesforce and Microsoft Office suite; technologically savvy and adaptable

Location: This position is based in Los Angeles, California. We work in a hybrid workplace with three days in the office.

Compensation: $140,000 - 155,000
