What You'll Do
Esperanza's work has expanded significantly in recent years, with a consolidated annual operating budget surpassing $80 million across 17 affiliated entities. As our mission has grown, so too has the complexity of our organizational and financial structures.
We are seeking a dedicated, strategic, and solutions-oriented Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to provide leadership and expertise across the full scope of our finance function. This is a pivotal moment, as we grow our portfolio through a new land trust, newly established 501(c)(3)s, and several active capital projects. The CFO will serve as a key advisor to the executive team, including the Founder/CEO and leaders of our affiliated entities, on budgeting and financial strategy. They will also oversee the development and day-to-day operations of our finance team.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Financial Strategy
- Formulate and recommend to the Founder/CEO and Board of Directors policies and procedures governing institutional financial activities
- Design funding flow and reporting structures across entities and to the parent Corporation to ensure continued financial health
- Develop cash and investment policies and manage assets in accordance with said policies
- Provide timely and accurate analyses of budgets, project proposals and business trends in the multiple administrative areas in order to assist the Founder/CEO, the Board, and other senior executives in performing their responsibilities
- Monitor and manage allocation of federal, state, city, and private grants; administer and advise on all contracts entered by the Corporation
Organizational Leadership
- In conjunction with the Senior Executive team, develop and implement an annual budgeting process and long-range financial plans. Prepare and submit the annual organizational budget to the Board of Directors for approval, relay ongoing updates to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors
- Partner in the development of the Corporation's plans and programs, evaluating and advising on the financial sustainability and regulatory feasibility of those programs
- In collaboration with the Founder/CEO and Executive team, develop and disseminate financial guidance, knowledge, and best practices across all entities, ensuring the most strategic and effective use of allocated funds
- Supervise and monitor expenditures of all funds
- Assure continual improvement of the budgeting process for the administrative operation through education of department managers on factors impacting their budgets and ongoing departmental performance to the budget
Finance Team Leadership and Operations
- Manage and develop a finance team which carries out the following financial activities: budget development, accounting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, investment of funds, forecasting, financial reporting, state and federal funds, grants, cost studies, travel, revenues, expenditures, financial statements, insurance, auditing and related operational functions of the institution
- Ensure completion of year-end reporting packages in a timely fashion to allow auditors to complete their work on a timely basis and within budget. Complete the audit report for presentation to the Board of Directors at its annual meeting
- Develop and implement enhanced systems, policies, and procedures that improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the Finance department, including accounting systems
- Prepare timely and accurate financial reports in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), including monthly and year-end financial statements
Who You'll Work With
You will report to the Founder and CEO of Esperanza, Rev. Luis A. Cortes, Jr, and sit on the network's senior leadership team.
You will directly supervise two controllers, and the accounting manager. You will have leadership of the nine person finance team, as well as an offsite team of up to five contracted staff for flexible response to organizational needs.
Required Skills and Experience
- 10+ years of senior financial leadership experience, ideally in a multi-entity structure or complex, multi-divisional organization, with an understanding of non-profit financing, long-term capital financing, or interrelated corporate entities
- A commitment to Esperanza's mission to serve and strengthen communities impacted by poverty to develop agency, voice, and influence over their own lives
- Financial expertise in at least one or more of the following: K-12 education, real estate, grants management, or housing
- A proven track record in non-profit fiscal management, financial modeling, asset leveraging, accounting, strategic planning, and budgeting
- Experience in structuring, managing, and developing a comprehensive finance team and corresponding personnel at an organization of comparable scale ($80m-$100m budget)
- Broad knowledge of business practices and technology as used to improve financial excellence and operations, including grants management and payroll
- Sound administrative and financial judgment
- Outstanding written and oral communication, creative thinking, and problem solving skills
- Ability to develop and sustain effective and collegial working relationships with all members of a senior management team, including through disagreements
- High standards of personal and professional integrity Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or similar field. Master's Degree preferred
Additional Details
Compensation: The compensation range for the Chief Financial Officer role is $220,000-$240,000, and is commensurate with experience.
Location: The CFO will be based full-time at Esperanza's headquarters in the Hunting Park neighborhood of Philadelphia.
Working Conditions: Conditions typical of an office environment, including computer and telephonic equipment. Evening and weekend hours are rare but occasionally required, as is the availability to represent the organization at conferences, conventions, and meetings, as appropriate and/or assigned.
