Measures for Justice - No Data, No Change

About the Organization

Measures for Justice (MFJ) is a nonpartisan nonprofit that's been leading the charge towards a more transparent and community-centered criminal justice system. Since 2011, MFJ has become the country's leading expert on how to make high-quality criminal justice data the bedrock of community-driven reform. In the United States, criminal justice data is thirty years behind what other industries like healthcare and education use to assess performance. As a result, high-quality criminal justice data is incredibly hard to access, understand, and use to advance policy priorities like public safety, due process, and smarter spending.

Our vision is a world in which the criminal justice system is fully transparent, accessible, and accountable to the communities it serves.

To this end, we help communities–which include courts, police, and prosecutors–access and use high-quality data to advocate for–and make–better policy decisions.

Our team includes experts in community engagement, data engineering, product design, and criminal justice. Together, we have:

  • Developed first-of-their-kind criminal justice data standards and comprehensive system-wide performance measures for police, prosecutors, and courts;
  • Built state-of-the-art, accessible data platforms for twenty states' worth of comparative court data and for local prosecutor and police data;
  • Engaged communities in data-driven change by centering education and dialogue in the work.

Our comprehensive approach helps communities get to data transparency and accountability. The approach has four parts:

  • Data Quality. We help criminal justice agencies assess and improve their data. Known as "Groundwork," our offerings are designed to meet criminal justice agencies where they are on the path to developing high-quality data.
  • Technical Assistance. We provide agencies with targeted, hands-on support to build stronger systems and smarter teams that cut bottlenecks and reduce costs. Services range from low- to high-touch offerings to ensure agencies make the most of their resources.
  • Transparency Platforms. We offer two data platforms: Commons and our National Data Portal. Commons is a community-driven local data tool that helps shape criminal justice policy. The platform makes criminal justice data both transparent and actionable, and enables goal-setting, fostering accountability. Commons is available now for several prosecutor offices and police departments across the country. The National Data Portal is among the largest bodies of standardized county-level criminal justice data in the country. It provides a snapshot of what's happening in local courts nationwide from arrest to post-conviction.
  • Community Engagement. We offer services that help bridge the gap between data and change. We engage communities to leverage data effectively, offering outreach, facilitation, and data literacy education. Through community engagement, we enable better data-driven decision-making by all.
