What You'll Do
We are seeking an enthusiastic and collaborative individual to join the institutional giving team. The successful candidate will join a growing development department responsible for raising over $50 million annually. The senior foundation manager will work closely with the institutional giving team to persuasively communicate ProPublica's mission to donors with the aim of growing support from institutional funders and ensuring cohesive messaging within the department. The manager will report to the assistant director of institutional gifts and work closely with the senior director of development and grant coordinator as well as colleagues in development, finance, and editorial.
Key Responsibilities
Materials Development and Project Management
- In partnership with the development and editorial teams, draft proposals designed to support $20M+ in institutional funding
- Create and catalog template language designed for use by the full development team, including both the institutional and individual giving realms
- Draft letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and grant reports for current and prospective foundations and select major donors
- Drive the creation of written materials autonomously, while simultaneously knowing when to selectively loop in and leverage key colleagues to provide input
- Manage language review process and incorporate feedback from key editorial stakeholders and management
- Maintain accurate foundation records, including tracking relationships, communications, and deadlines
- Help ensure adherence to grant deliverables and timelines
Relationship Building & Collaboration
- Build strong relationships with colleagues, and partner with teams across the organization (including audience, communications and editorial) to gather supporting collateral
- Coordinate with finance to develop and communicate budgets and financial reports to donors and other key audiences
- Provide support to colleagues in developing targeted language and creating new, relevant drafts of donor-facing collateral
- Work with the grant coordinator to ensure accurate accounting of grants in the Salesforce database
- Support stewardship activities that strengthen long-term relationships with institutional donors, including drafting emails and other outreach documents
- Participate in internal strategy meetings with members of the institutional giving team and editorial leadership in support of foundation donor cultivation and stewardship
- Additional duties as assigned
Who You'll Work With
You will report to the assistant director of institutional gifts. You will frequently collaborate with colleagues on the institutional giving and individual giving teams, as well as members of the editorial and finance teams.
Required Skills and Experience
- 5+ years experience in institutional non-profit fundraising, with demonstrated success writing grants for philanthropic funders and contributing to effective grants management processes
- Collaborative work ethic and keen ability to track and report out progress and results to management and senior leadership
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to both create and adapt content for a range of audiences
- Strong understanding of voice, with a track record of developing materials on behalf of multiple authors
- Strong initiative-taking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to establish priorities and work under time constraints
- Commitment to fostering a respectful, welcoming and inclusive environment
- Proficiency with Google and Microsoft Office products, and familiarity with Salesforce or other fundraising databases
- Familiarity with Sailthru, Airtable, Trello a plus
- Keen interest in journalism and current events
Additional Details
Location and Work Environment
ProPublica will consider candidates nationwide; candidates based in the New York City metropolitan area will be given preference. Candidates located near one of ProPublica's offices may be required to work on site 2-3 days per week. We have offices in New York City; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Chicago; Phoenix; and Berkeley, California. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. Candidates based outside of New York City can expect to travel 2-3 times per year.
Compensation
Salary for this position is in the $70,000 – $90,000 range. This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a person's experience, accomplishments and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.
