What You'll Do
All Our Kin (AOK) is seeking an innovative and dedicated Chief Development Officer (CDO) to serve as a key organizational leader and a primary architect of our fundraising, development, and communication strategies. Reporting directly to the Co-Founder and CEO, the CDO will act as a critical thought partner, advisor, and driver on all matters related to organizational sustainability and growth. You will lead a committed team to design and execute an ambitious fundraising strategy to raise $10M - $12M annually, while managing your own portfolio of major donors.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned fundraising professional and relationship manager with a deep commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, who is passionate about bringing partners and donors along on the journey to change childcare practice and policy in our country.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational and Team Leadership
- Serve as a key organizational leader, contributing to growth strategy, mentoring staff, advancing equity, inclusion, and justice, and leading fundraising, development, and communication strategies
- Serve as a thought partner and advisor to the CEO and C-suite on fundraising and development, providing guidance on key strategies and effectively navigating conflict and complexity as needed
- Partner with the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Strategy Officer to implement a streamlined and strategic system for cross-departmental collaboration, creating a culture where all team members feel empowered and responsible for advancing All Our Kin's sustainability efforts
- Support the CEO in maximizing her efforts and effectiveness to achieve ambitious fundraising goals
- Lead and inspire a team of fundraising and communications professionals during a unique and challenging period in the childcare funding landscape; provide professional coaching and development to grow AOK's fundraising potential
External Leadership and Donor Engagement
- Lead the donor cultivation strategy, elevating other team members as needed, to implement a consistent and effective approach that keeps funders engaged and team members accountable
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual and institutional donors, personally securing gifts of five and six figures
- Manage, grow, and actively engage a portfolio of prospects as the primary relationship owner, with clear annual revenue goals and activity expectations
- Partner with the VP of External Relations in crafting and executing compelling stories that engage new supporters and steward existing donors
- Lead the Board Fundraising Committee by establishing clear structures, goals, and support, enabling them to achieve ambitious targets and involve their board colleagues in their efforts
- In partnership with each board member, set expectations for fundraising efforts as appropriate
- Advance strategies to engage a more racially and ethnically diverse donor base that better reflects the family child care educators, families, and children we serve
Fundraising Strategy and Operations
- Design and execute an ambitious fundraising strategy to stabilize and grow the fundraising program, raising $10M - $12M annually, and personally lead frontline fundraising efforts
- Develop and implement annual and multi-year development strategies and goals that incorporate a range of funding sources, including major donors, institutional donors, government contracts, and earned revenue, with an emphasis on sustainability
- Establish clear goals, benchmarks, and metrics to measure progress and ensure accountability, creating and strengthening a results-oriented culture of philanthropy
- Identify and implement strategies and systems that support the CEO, senior leadership, and the program team's role in donor engagement and stewardship
- Anticipate shifts in the philanthropic landscape and seize opportunities that align with All Our Kin's mission and strategic priorities, leveraging real-time relationships and donor engagement
Who You'll Work With
- You will report to the Co-Founder and CEO, Jessica Sager.
- You will oversee a team of ~9, including four direct reports: the VP, External Relations; Director of Institutional Giving, the Major Gifts Officer (Director); and the Executive & Board Operations Manager. The Director, Partnership Development has a dotted-line reporting relationship to the Chief Development Officer.
- You will frequently collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Strategy Officer.
Required Skills and Experience
- Passion for All Our Kin's mission and demonstrated commitment to our values of: Maintain High Standards, Focus on Strengths, Place Relationships First, Commit to Transformative Outcomes, Engage in Continuous Learning, Center Equity, Inclusion, and Justice
- At least 15+ years of overall professional experience, with at least 5 of those years in senior-level fundraising roles within high-growth organizations
- Demonstrated success in meeting fundraising targets of $10M - $12M annually
- Experience with institutional (government, foundation, corporate) and individual donors, tailoring messaging and approaches to a wide variety of stakeholders
- Professional commitment to social justice; previous experience in a social justice environment is highly preferred
- Excellent leadership and change management skills, with the ability to build relationships, mentor, and influence staff at all levels; excited to "roll up your sleeves" and do the work as well as manage and direct the work of others
- Demonstrated people management experience with the ability to coach, manage, develop, and retain high-performing teams
- Exceptional relationship management skills, with a track record of working collaboratively with a diverse set of colleagues and stakeholders to achieve shared goals
- Thrives in a highly collaborative, collegial, entrepreneurial, and remote environment
Additional Details
This role is remote, with an expectation of monthly travel. Preference will be given to candidates who live near a major airport with direct flights to New York City and/or Hartford, CT, to facilitate easier travel to funder meetings.
