Water.org is a global nonprofit organization and our mission is to remove the barriers between people living in poverty and access to the safe water and sanitation solutions they need to survive and thrive.

About the Organization

Today, 1 in 4 people lack access to safe water, 2 in 5 lack a safe toilet, and 1 million deaths occur annually from water-related diseases. Water.org exists to change this. An international nonprofit organization based in Kansas City, MO, Water.org is deeply committed to solving the global water crisis. We believe that safe water and sanitation are the keys to empowering a bright future, unlocking education, economic opportunity, and improved health for communities worldwide.

Founded by Gary White and Matt Damon, Water.org has been pioneering market-driven, smart financial solutions for more than 30 years to break down the barriers between people living in poverty and universal access to safe water. Collaboration is central to our proven approach. Our portfolio of distinct solutions includes, WaterCredit (helping families finance home water and sanitation solutions through accessible loans), WaterEquity (bringing in private capital to sustain lending), and WaterConnect (developing infrastructure projects to reach more people). Our model is highly efficient: every dollar donated helps unlock $21 for water and sanitation solutions based on the capital we help mobilize.

Our solutions are scaling rapidly, with more than half of our total impact achieved in the past five years alone. Today, we operate on the ground in 15 countries across 4 continents, having already empowered more than 92 million people with safe water or sanitation. To date, we have mobilized $8.2 billion USD in capital and facilitated 20.4 million loans. These solutions directly empower those in need: 85% of participating households live on less than $8.30 a day, 90% of borrowers are women, and the average loan size is $407, maintained by a 98% repayment rate.
