Every Mother Counts (EMC) mission is to ensure that the maternal health journey before, during, and after childbirth is safe, respectful, and equitable for everyone, everywhere. EMC envisions a world where pregnancy and childbirth are positive, transformational experiences. A world where everyone can access quality maternity care that centers mothers, and no one suffers or dies of preventable complications. A world where every mother truly counts.

About the Organization

Every two minutes, a woman dies from complications of pregnancy and childbirth—that's more than 800 preventable deaths every day around the world. Motivated by the intrinsic human right to maternal health, Every Mother Counts (EMC) is dedicated to ensuring that all people, everywhere, experience a safe and respectful journey through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. We started by spotlighting stories told by those closest to the issue. Over time, these personal accounts have shone a spotlight on the global imperative to transform maternal health. Since 2010, EMC has invested tens of millions of dollars to advance system-wide change through the development of professional, dedicated, and compassionate providers in every setting who are focused on respectful care that centers mothers.

In addition to investments in community-led models of care, EMC is committed to diversifying the healthcare workforce, and mobilizing for change through policy and advocacy efforts. Through collaboration with policymakers, practitioners, and local leaders, the team identifies priority maternal health issues and advocates for change. EMC's program and policy efforts are complemented by our compelling storytelling, which is at the core of the organization's founding. About the Role

What You'll Do

As Every Mother Counts navigates a period of organizational evolution, we are seeking a highly collaborative, process-oriented, and hyper-operational Director of Finance and Operations. In this role, you will be the organizational anchor for our day-to-day business operations, physical and digital infrastructure, while overseeing and partnering on core financial systems.

We are looking for someone who thrives on building systems, managing complex vendor relationships, and standardizing workflows to help our lean team run smoothly and flexibly. While you will manage day-to-day financial administration, compliance, and reporting systems in close coordination with our fractional CFO, your primary energy will be dedicated to scaling internal capacity, standardizing team communication, and strengthening cross-departmental operations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Business Operations & Technology Infrastructure
  • Design, improve, and champion internal workflows and communication protocols to foster collaboration, eliminate friction, and drive team efficiency.
  • Serve as the primary owner for project management software (such as Monday.com). Drive consistent adoption, build team capacity, and standardize its use across the organization.
  • Serve as the primary organizational liaison and business partner to external IT consultants.
  • In partnership with our IT consultant, oversee compliance with data security policies and ensure staff adhere to protocols related to password management, multi-factor authentication, and secure data handling.
  • Partner with the Executive Assistant (who holds office management capabilities) to ensure a high-functioning, collaborative physical office environment.
  • Act as an organizational "translator," turning complex operational processes and system updates into clear, digestible guidance for a diverse, mission-driven team.
Compliance, Risk Management & Internal Controls
  • Monitor regulatory requirements, including state charity registrations, charity watchdog renewals, and insurance renewals, to ensure the organization remains in good standing.
  • Act as a steward of organizational policies and internal controls, ensuring that day-to-day operational practices—including check requests, expense reporting, and vendor management—are conducted in accordance with the fiscal policies established by the Finance and Operations team.
Financial Administration
  • Oversee day-to-day finance systems and manage our financial tech stack (QuickBooks, Ramp, and Salesforce). Ensure that the books are kept accurately and regular reports can be cleanly generated.
  • Partner closely with the Philanthropy team to ensure data integrity, smooth tracking of incoming gifts and pledge collections, and overall financial reconciliation between development systems and the general ledger.
  • Work hand-in-hand with our fractional CFO and external accounting firm to support annual audit preparation, tax reporting, and clean financial transitions.
HR, Legal & Personnel Operations
  • Serve as the primary internal point of contact for external HR partners and legal counsel.
  • Help coordinate hiring and onboarding processes, manage contract lifecycles, and help ensure that organizational policies remain current, compliant, and aligned with legal and regulatory requirements.

Who You'll Work With

  • You will report to the President and Founder.
  • You will supervise the Finance Associate and coordinate closely with the fractional CFO.
  • You will collaborate across the organization, frequently working with the Vice President of Philanthropy to ensure grant payment accuracy and appropriate cash management; with the Chief of Staff and HR Consultant to align on team onboarding, transitions, and internal compliance workflows; with the Executive Assistant to coordinate office management and facilities.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 8+ years of professional experience, with a proven track record of developing, standardizing, and scaling business operations, administrative workflows, and cross-functional processes in a nonprofit setting.
  • Exceptional systems-thinking mindset with high technical fluency and experience navigating, configuring, and teaching others to use tools like Monday.com, Salesforce, QuickBooks, Ramp, and ADP.
  • Proven vendor management experience, with the ability to manage, evaluate, and maximize relationships with IT and other service providers, external legal counsel, and operations consultants.
  • Familiarity with compliance operations, including experience coordinating insurance renewals, charitable watchdog updates, and multi-state registrations.
  • Strong financial literacy with experience overseeing bookkeeping, executing internal controls (such as check requests and expense reporting), and coordinating with financial/accounting teams.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to translate complex systems, security protocols, or financial reports into highly accessible concepts for non-technical team members.
  • A flexible, solutions-oriented approach to process design; someone who values structure but understands how to remain flexible to support a lean, creative, and passion-driven culture.
  • Deep alignment with the mission of Every Mother Counts and a commitment to integrating principles of equity and belonging into daily operations.
  • Ability to thrive in a hybrid office environment.
